Introduction

AGSS is the umbrella professional institution of Slovene geographers, founded in 1922. Therefore, AGSS is one of the oldest professional associations of the state. In 1998 the president of Slovenia, Milan Kučan has rewarded the Association for its merit in enriching the Slovenian science.

Members of the Association are independent geographic and related societies. They organise professional lectures, prepare didactic resource materials, organise excursions in and around Slovenia, etc. Initiatives to establish new forms of professional associations and to incorporate them into the Association are recently presented.

The Association is executing the following tasks:
it co-ordinates activities of regional geographic societies,
supports professional research,
stimulates and directs modernisation of teaching,
prepares professional conferences, lectures and field works,
promotes and develops international professional co-operation,
conducts professional publishing.

For the occasion of 150th anniversary of Austrian Geographical Society Association of Slovene geographical Societies was awarded with honorary membership.
