The Group of Experts is composed of experts from various linguistic/geographical divisions that have been established at the UN Conferences on the Standardization of Geographical Names. The task of each division is to stimulate activities in the standardization of geographical names within the division, through technical meetings, correspondence, etc. Slovenia belongs to East Central and South-East Europe Division. The tasks referring to geographical names in Slovena are carried out by the Slovene Governmental Commission for the Standardisation of Geographical Names.

Under the umbrella of UNGEGN, several working groups have been created to follow up topics and issues which cut across the Divisional structure. There are all together 10 working groups: WG on Country Names, WG on Toponymic Data Files and Gazetteers, WG on Toponymic Terminology, WG on Publicity and Funding, WG on Romanization Systems, WG on Training Courses in Toponymy, WG on Evaluation and implementation, WG on Exonyms, WG on Pronunciation , and WG on the Promotion of Indigenous and Minority Group Names.
