Research interests

In her research work, Vita Zalar deals with the history of “gypsies” and Roma. When historicizing “gypsies”, her approach epistemologically leans on the term “gypsy” as originally a social, non-ethnic category. She is especially interested in nuances and transformations of the semantic field of the term “gypsy”, from the earliest mentions of “zygeiner” in the Late Middle Ages, to the shift towards an ethnically defined conception of “Gypsies” and “Roma” during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Methodologically and epistemologically, her research leans on microhistory, social and cultural history.
