The project critically examines the delineations separating noise and music based on the observation of two parameters: sound production and sound perception of bell ringing in urban spaces. The delineation between sound and noise is set on the physical, acoustic and musical levels of characteristics of sound production and on the level of the social construction of the aesthetic perception of sound. At the core of this research is the question of why, when and at what circumstances the sound is acceptable (as music) or unacceptable (as noise) and what meanings the sound of bells has to an individual and to the community.
