In his book Urejanje prihodnosti ('Shaping the Future'), Viktor Žakelj addresses central questions of our time in a series of analytical and reflective essays: how can the gap between the logic of the market and the need for a collective, planned world order be bridged, how can freedom and responsibility be reconciled and how can the role of the individual be understood in a time of systemic crises? He examines the ideological foundations of contemporary capitalism, particularly neoliberalism, which he argues dissolves social bonds, undermines solidarity and encourages passive consumption. The essays also deal with the right of veto, the social power of knowledge, the mythology of political realism, the problem of the limits to growth and the role of ethics in the economy. The author draws attention to the exploitation of nature, people and meaning in today's society and calls for an eco-social transformation based on justice, the common good and respect for intergenerational obligations. This is a weighty yet accessible text that encourages reflection and active civic participation.
