New research equipment RI-SI-LifeWatch

 

 

RESEARCH CENTRE OF THE SLOVENIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AND ARTS

Within RI-SI-LifeWatch project Karst research institute purchased equipment for study and collection of scientific data from the field of biodiversity.

 

  • MICROSCOPE WITH INTEGRATED ATR CRYSTAL

    The equipment is designed to carefully examine the samples and determine the types of polymers that will be found in the samples.
  • MICROPLASTIC SEPARATOR

    The equipment is designed to separate microplastic particles from sediment samples based on different densities of microplastics and sediment particles.
  • AIR SAMPLER

    The equipment is designed to capture samples of particles in the air and to search for potential microplastic particles brought by the wind.
  • PCR TERMOCYCLER

    The equipment is intended for specific amplification of nucleic acid fragments.
  • CHAMBER FOR PREPARATION OF PCR MIXTURES

    Equipment for preparation of reaction mixtures in molecular biology in a way to avoid environmental contamination
  • APPARATUS FOR MEASURING NUCLEIC ACID CONCENTRATION

    Equipment for determination of nucleic acid concentration for further applications, e.g. sequencing, molecular cloning.
  • CAMERA AND ASSOCIATED SOFTWARE FOR PHOTODOCUMENTATION AND PROCESSING OF ELECTROPHORETIC IMAGE

    Equipment for visual monitoring of the performance of nucleic acid isolations, PCR reactions, isolation of nucleic acid fragments, and image processing.
  • EPIFLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPE: UPGRADE EXISTING WITH UV LIGHT, CAMERA MOUNT, CAMERA, SOFTWARE

    The equipment is intended for the observation of organisms with natural fluorescence and labeled biological material for the localization of subcellular structures and the capture and processing of images.
  • TITRATOR

    The equipment is intended for the analysis of water samples primarily for the determination of alkalinity, overall hardness and calcium content, but also enables the determination of other ions in water (chlorides, sulphates, ammonium…).
  • ION CHROMATOGRAPHY

    The equipment is designed to determine the concentrations of selected anions and cations in water samples.
  • ENERGY-DISPERSION FLUORESCENCE SPECTROMETE

    The equipment is intended for determining the elemental composition of geological samples (rocks, sediments, minerals and crystals).
  • AUTOMATIC DATALOGGERS AND MULTIMETER

    The equipment is designed to automatically record the physical and chemical parameters of groundwater. Multiparameter probes measure selected physical (temperature, pressure, conductivity, turbidity) and chemical (pH, chlorides, dissolved oxygen, presence of artificial tracers) parameters, and small portable recorders measure physical (temperature, pressure, conductivity) parameters.
  • TERRESTRIAL LIDAR

    The equipment is intended for accurate scanning of minor natural phenomena on the earth's surface (relief, forest vegetation) and underground (scanning of karst caves), as well as cultural heritage objects (eg archaeological sites). The end result is 3D models of scanned phenomena, their visualization and analysis. The terrestrial lidar has a laser range of up to 25 m, so it is suitable for shooting small (local) areas over short distances. Given that this is the first example of such equipment in Slovenia, its use is largely unexplored and opens up opportunities in many research and application fields.
  • ELECTRICAL TOMOGRAPHY METE

    The equipment is intended for measuring the electrical resistance of the soil, mainly for determining the depth of sediments and soils under vegetation, for exploring underground structures of surface relief forms (sinkholes, landslides, paleo-lathes), for detecting underground karst caves and exploring other karst phenomena, for exploring groundwater, waste and other ecological and environmental problems.
  • TEMPERATURE GRADIENT PLATE

    The equipment is intended for measuring the electrical resistance of the soil, mainly for determining the depth of sediments and soils under vegetation, for exploring underground structures of surface relief forms (sinkholes, landslides, paleo-lathes), for detecting underground karst caves and exploring other karst phenomena, for exploring groundwater, waste and other ecological and environmental problems.
  • FIBER TENSILE HARDNESS TESTER

    The equipment is intended for quantification of mechanical properties of biological materials under tensile loads.
  • COMPUTER INFRASTRUCTURE FOR LIFEWATCH-SI NODE

    The equipment is intended for processing and editing research data as part of the establishment of the RI-SI-LifeWatch data center. Supporting hardware is intended for education, analisys of scientific data, also for partner meetings and workshops and other activities related to the project. It consists of workstation, tablets, notebooks, field notebook and field tablet, server infrastructure, external media, printer, 3d printer and portable projector.
  • Cameras

    Compact camera for meetings, reports and photogrametry. GoPro and Insta360 for documenting caves and other karst related phenomena on field expeditions.
  • DRONE

    For taking areal photos and videos for presentation and for photogrametry - 3d model creation technique.

    The equipment is designed to amplify nucleic acids in a variety of biologicals
    samples, for very sensitive real-time nucleic acid quantification allowing for a variety of applications
    such as the detection of specific parts of nucleic acids by predetermined starting oligonucleotides,
    detection of gene expression, etc.

    The equipment is intended for measuring the temperature and relative humidity of the air and the temperature of the soil moisture content.
  • FIELD CAMERAS TO MONITOR THE PHENOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF TREES

    The equipment is designed to monitor the phenological development of trees.
  • DENDROMETER

    The equipment is intended for continuous monitoring of tree increments and microclimate at selected locations of research plots in the Eastern Cohesion Region.
  • LABORATORY DEVICE FOR PREPARATION OF LABORATORY PURE WATER

    The equipment is intended for the preparation of laboratory water type II, which is a condition and basis for all types of analysis in the Laboratory of Forest Ecology. The equipment includes a Millipore Elix device with an electrodeionization module, a 60 L purified water tank and a softening device that performs the initial purification of tap water.
