Cave Register
On the basis of the Institute’s statutory public mandate to collect, process and verify cave data (Protection of Underground Caves Act, Articles 8 and 9), the Karst Research Institute (IZRK) ZRC SAZU compiles, validates and maintains information on caves. The Cave Register, maintained in duplicate with the Caving Association of Slovenia (JZS), encompasses all registered caves in the Republic of Slovenia (15,844 caves; 2025 report). In accordance with the Act, new data submitted in the form of official records are provided by the Caving Association of Slovenia, caving clubs outside the Association, foreign caving clubs, individual contributors, and the Karst Research Institute (ZRC SAZU). Hard-copy documentation (descriptions, surveys, photographs, etc.) is archived in cabinets, and a digital database is maintained on the basis of this material.
